People were surprised by my sudden retirement and distraught over my subsequent behavior. Most blamed mental illness but I assure you that I am not afflicted with any such malady. Rather, I am cursed with knowing the truth. Perhaps a discussion of my last case is warranted to help enlighten how a hardened police detective became a blubbering mess sitting alone in a cheap hotel. This may be my last chance as this is one of the few moments of lucidity I have experienced since the accursed event.

Hello everyone! As part of Short Story Saturday, I have posted another short story, this one entitled The Hands That Move. Please enjoy.

Introduction by Harold Koonce, police sergeant, Evergreen, Washington

So a lot of people want me to talk about this story and post it online but to tell you the truth, I don’t find the story all that interesting compared to how we found it. You see, I was just sitting in the station talking to my pal Murphy when suddenly this man busts through the doors like a bat outta hell.

He starts talking about how he and his friend decided to do some exploring over on Douglas Island right off the coast of Evergreen, one of those places that are supposed to be off-limits to everyone by the Douglas Island Natural Area Reserve an account that it is one of the few places that has all those Ximuce trees, though now that I think about it, I’m not sure why that’s sort important. We got plenty of those in mainland Evergreen.

His arms ached. His legs wobbled. His bloated body gasped in exhaustion. Both fists felt like blistered hams underneath his gloves. The lights were so bright his skin became dry and flaked. The canvas felt like concrete underneath his feet. The smell of burnt cigarettes and cheap bourbon wafted in the air. The hazy lights in the smoke-filled room that was so thick that the crowd seemed like an amorphous luminous blob that moved oddly to and fro like a wave.

With a loud bang, splinters flew across the room. A wave of armored men wearing helmets and masks flooded the room with the ferocity of water through a hole in a broken dam. The young man’s swivel chair flew backward and hit an adjacent wall as he immediately fell to his knees with his hands over his hand. Their assault rifles pointed at him, their flashlights providing the room its only illumination save the luminescent glow of the young man’s laptop that resided atop a crudely made wooden table.

“I surrender!” the young man shouted.

She did not know how she entered that room. It was devoid of any portal to the outside world. Each of the featureless walls loomed and felt as though they were closing in. A distinct odor wafted through the air. It was the smell of roses. It reminded her of melancholy and despair.

Hello everyone! As part of Short Story Saturday, I have posted another short story, this one entitled My Spiritual Codependence. Please enjoy.

She appears to me at the most inopportune moments. When I’m at the gym, when I’m driving, when I’m at work, even when I’m in the throes of passion with a woman. She doesn’t care. She’ll appear out of nowhere to interrupt whatever it is I was doing to tell me what is on her mind.

He didn’t go there looking for love. All he wanted was a stiff drink after a hard day working for the Northwest Logging Company. The Waterfall Bar wasn’t his usual haunt. It was far different as it emanated with refinement and class. Firefly lights, a dark, rich color scheme reminiscent of a cigar lounge and classical music melodiously playing in the background set a mood that was a far cry from the large fluorescent lights, the green and brown color scheme reminiscent of a pool hall and heavy metal and rap that blared at his favorite drinking establishment.

The man found himself on a couch. It was late at night, much later than you’d expect a therapist’s office to be open. She had lost track of time. As a favor, she agreed to speak with a patient with a poor and potentially dangerous mental health history. This was a mistake.

Hello everyone! As part of Short Story Saturday, I have posted another short story, this one entitled Non Morieris in Somnis Memorias. Please enjoy.

I’m walking through immaculate streets. Once vibrant and full of life, now sterile. The wind blows the leaves in front of me and serves as the town’s only occupants. The ticks of a large clock tower in the center of town reverberate against my brain with each passing step. It acts as a reminder of the inexorable nature of time. Its presence is inescapable.

I am exhausted. Not physically, mentally. Physical fatigue is impossible here.
